Using a Computer for Exams
Barry University School of Law is offering students the option to take exams using their laptop computers. ExamSoft Worldwide, Inc., through its Examplify product, provides students the ability to take an examination on a computer by locking down all other Windows applications. This provides students a secured environment in which to take examinations on a computer with a reduced risk of violations of the student honor code.
Examplify serves as a simplified word processor similar to Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect, with the ability to undo the user's last action. Instructors can deliver True/False, Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank, and essay questions through ExamSoft and can activate a spell checker for students to use on the essay responses.
The registration process will include downloading each exam you will be taking within a specified period of time before the exam period begins. You will be instructed to download your exam files. The exam files are password protected to ensure that the exam is opened only at the appropriate time during the exam. The day of the exam, following the exam proctor's instructions, you will take the exam in the Examplify environment, typing your answers to the exam questions. When you exit Examplify after time is called at the end of the exam, your exam answer will be uploaded to ExamSoft's secure web site.
Examplify may be used on a PC or Mac. It is not compatible with any PC emulation software. The minimum recommended system requirements: See link above.
What to do Prior to Exam Day:
-
Register Examplify by the signup deadline. You can only download exam files once so only do so on the computer you intend to use on exam day.
-
Ensure: (1) that your PC meets the specifications listed above, (2) that there is plenty of free hard drive space, (3) that your PC is virus free, and (4) that your PC is free of disk errors by running SCANDISK (click Start Button, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Scandisk or Disk Cleanup).
-
Once you have installed and registered Examplify, familiarize yourself with the software by utilizing the built-in Practice Exam feature.
-
Examplify's opening screen asks for an ID#. An anonymous exam number will be assigned to you by the School of Law Registrar. You will need to pickup your number prior to exam day. Use your anonymous exam number in this ID field.
-
Locate your A/C battery power indicator light on your laptop to determine which light indicates you are running on A/C power (i.e. power from a wall outlet).
-
Ensure that your battery has at least 20 minutes of charge in it prior to the exam in the event there is a temporary power outage.

What to do on Exam Day...and a few points to remember:
-
Bring your power cord, battery (in the event of power loss), an extension cord, your exam number, and a Barry Student ID. If you normally use an external keyboard and mouse, be sure to bring those as well. If you wish to use earplugs, please be sure to bring your own.
-
Arrive to the exam room at least 30 minutes early, plug your computer into a power outlet, turn on the computer, but DO NOT launch Examplify until instructed to do so.
-
Immediately before Examplify launches the exam, you will be provided a warning screen with RED STOP SIGNS indicating that you should not begin the exam until instructed to do so. Heed this warning.
-
Exams will not be delayed or suspended due to computer problems.
-
During the exam, use extreme care when highlighting and deleting, as well as using other functions that may significantly change a document as Examplify only allows the exam taker to undo the last action.
-
Students who do not take the time to become familiar with their laptop computer or with word processing functions, should consider handwriting their exams. No administrative relief will be granted in the event that an exam file is deleted or otherwise altered.
-
Remember, once you have successfully completed the Examplify registration process you can download Examplify again on additional computers for use as backups. Follow all ExamSoft instructions outlined on ExamSoft's site (steps 3-5).
-
Any attempt to disable or tamper with Examplify's security features will be considered a violation of the student Honor Code. It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with your equipment, the Examplify software and instructions provided by Examsoft on its web site prior to the start of your exam. Please allow yourself sufficient time to become familiar with your laptop and the application. Commencement of the exam will not be delayed due to a hardware problem with your laptop.
-
Do not uninstall Examplify until you receive your grades. Use of your laptop and ExamSoft software for midterm and final exams is voluntary. You assume all risks and responsibilities.
