Passwords are case sensitive.

Registration Information

The New York State Board of Law Examiners (the "Board") has contracted with Examsoft Worldwide to administer the NewYork Law Examination ("NYLE"). An applicant must successfully complete the New York Law Course ("NYLC") and apply for the NYLE through the Board's website before the applicant may register with Examsoft.  After an applicant has applied for the NYLE with the Board, the Board will furnish the applicant's contact information to Examsoft. About three to four weeks prior to the date of the NYLE, the applicant will be contacted by Examsoft by email only with the instructions for purchasing, downloading and registering the exam software that is required for the NYLE.

Mandatory Mock Exam

After purchasing and downloading the software, applicants MUST personally and timely perform and submit a Mandatory Mock Exam to confirm that the software works on the applicant's computer.

The password to open the mock exam is: Mock123

Downloading Actual Exam File

The Monday before the NYLE, the applicant MUST ALSO launch Examplify and timely download the actual exam file that will be used on exam day. This is a separate and distinct step from completing all registration steps and completing the mandatory mock exam.  If you are unsure of any step in the process, you must contact Examsoft well before the posted deadline (see below) as no deadline will be extended (even by a few minutes ) at any time for any reason.  Therefore, please carefully and regularly monitor your emails.

NYLE Fee

There is a $29 non-refundable fee for the NYLE, payable to Examsoft at the time of purchase of the software.

NYLE Exam Format

The NYLE is a 50 item, two hour, open book, multiple choice test administered online that tests important aspects of New York law. For more information on the content of the NYLE please consult the BOLE website at www.nybarexam.org. Although it is open book, you may not electronically search the text of the Course Materials using a searchable version of the Course Materials. No backward navigation will be allowed during the exam. This means that once an applicant has answered a question and/or navigated to the next question, the applicant will not be able to return to the prior question.

Exam Day Instructions

The Exam Time is 12:00 PM Eastern until 2:00 PM Eastern (unless you have been granted testing accommodations). The start time of the exam will NOT be adjusted to accommodate candidates in different time zones. Therefore, if you reside in a time zone other than the Eastern Time zone, it is your responsibility to make certain that you commence the exam at 12:00 PM Eastern Time. An internet connection is required to start the exam. You may begin as soon as the password is released. Do not delay in beginning the exam as you will NOT be able to start the exam after 12:15 PM ET. Your two hours begins to run when you check the box and click the 'Start Exam' button (see Exam Day Instructions for the New York Law Examination). At the conclusion of two hours, the exam file will automatically close, and the applicant will be prompted to upload the exam file to Examsoft. All exam files must be uploaded to Examsoft by 4:30 PM ET on the date of the exam. A failure to timely upload the exam file will result in a score of zero (0) on the exam and you will be required to re-take the New York Law Course.

Honor Code

On Exam day, each applicant will be required to adhere to an Honor Code. By launching Examplify, the applicant will be certifying that they will complete the NYLE without assistance from anyone else, they will not provide assistance on the NYLE to any other applicant and, during the NYLE, they will not electronically search the NYLC/NYLE Course Materials. Further, by uploading the exam file to Examsoft following this NYLE, the applicant will be certifying that they completed the NYLE without assistance from anyone else, that they did not provide assistance on the NYLE to any other applicant and, during the NYLE, they did not electronically search the NYLC/NYLE Course Materials using a searchable version of the Course Materials

Disclaimer Regarding Risks Associated with Computer Use

This notice is intended to alert participants in the NYLE of the risks involved with the use of a computer, the procedures to be followed in the event problems are encountered, and the potential consequences of problems should they occur. The Board does not own or maintain the software used for the NYLE. You are required to purchase and download the software directly from the third party software vendor, ExamSoft Worldwide, Inc. The Board cannot guarantee the performance of the software furnished by a private software vendor. You must provide your own computer, and that computer must meet or exceed the minimum system requirements published by Examsoft on this website.

Technical difficulties are a common risk with the use of any computer or mobile device and could occur before, during or after examination. Technical difficulties may include hardware or software malfunctions, data saving or retrieval problems, operator errors, upload or download problems, or the loss of electrical power at the examination facility. In the event technical difficulties should occur during the NYLE, no extra testing time will be provided nor will a makeup exam be provided. Should technical difficulties prevent you from taking the NYLE, or completing the NYLE, your sole remedy is to re-apply for the next administration of the NYLE.

Following the NYLE, you must upload your exam file to Examsoft by 4:30 PM ET on the date of the examination.  Failure to do so will result in the disqualification of your exam. If all or any portion of your answers are missing due to technical difficulties, you are required to assist the Board in any efforts to retrieve your answers including (a) securing your computer and maintaining the security software and files on your computer until after the results of the examination have been released; (b) not modifying or reformatting the hard-drive on your computer; and (c) emailing, uploading or mailing any data or files from your computer that are requested by Examsoft or the Board. If any portions of your answers are unrecoverable, only those portions that are recovered will be graded and included in your examination score. There are risks associated with renting or borrowing a computer for use on the bar examination. If you no longer have access to the computer after the conclusion of the examination, you may not be able to retrieve files which could assist in the recovery of missing portions of your answers. Should you choose to rent or borrow a computer, you should arrange to keep the computer until after the results of the examination have been released.
